Mr Waddle, as I have affectionately named him is one of the colony at Birdland in the Cotswolds. The birds seem to be such characters and I had fun watching them diving in and out of their pool on the sunny day of my visit.
In this watercolour painting, I have focused on trying to recreate the different elements of the bird’s physique. I became absorbed by the different elements from the lovely freckled flesh tones found underneath the wing to the gnarly textures of the beak. I used a range of techniques for this from layered washes wet on wet to textured brushstrokes.
