Printmaking Techniques Course – Event Details

Overview:

On this printmaking techniques course, you will learn how to create wonderfully expressive prints using monoprint, polyprint and drypoint etching processes. In addition, you will learn how to develop effective and simple print designs and create vibrant and colourful background pieces which bring your designs to life.

Experience level:

This art course is suitable for beginners to improvers as there will be guided instruction throughout. Attendees will be limited to 8 to ensure that everyone will receive individual support.

About the tutor:

The course will be led by Sharon Brookes who is the proprietor and lead tutor of Backbury House Retreats. She has a degree in Art, is a practising artist as well as a fully qualified art teacher with nearly 30 years’ experience of teaching in a range of educational settings.

The Course Timings:

The course runs from Saturday-Sunday, 10:30am to 3:30pm on each day and offers a comprehensive programme.

Example of the course programme:

• Firstly, you will learn how to develop a simple and effective drawn image suitable for print.
• You will then receive step-by-step practical demonstrations on how to translate your design into print using monoprint technique. This technique involves tracing your designs directly into dry ink to create a print.
• Next, you will learn how to create a dry-point etching by transferring your design onto an acrylic etching plate. You will learn how to etch your design using specialist needle pens plus and how to ink-up your completed plates for print.
• Then, you will develop your designs further and experiment with the process of poly-printing. This involves creating a relief print within a polystyrene block.
• Lastly, you will have fun exploring expressive watercolour techniques to use for backgrounds for your prints.
• By the end of the printmaking course, you will aim to achieve a series of effective prints using several printmaking methods which you can then proudly take home.

You may wish to bring a protective apron to wear.

Access:

• We offer free designated car parking for up to 8 vehicles found next to our private road. The studio is then accessed by a short 2-minute walk.
• In addition, we also have parking for two cars found closer to the studio requiring reduced walking and no steps.
• Please note that our studio bathroom facilities are found on the first floor accessed by a set of stairs. However, we can arrange alternative ground floor facilities, with advanced notice.
