DESCRIPTION:Nature Journalling Course – Event Details\nOverview:\nDuring this nature journalling course\, you will be expertly guided in creative nature journalling. This will involve completing workshops in drawing\, painting and printmaking in order to develop pages for a nature journal. In addition. you will have the opportunity to undertake a nature walk within the surrounding area of outstanding natural beauty. \nExample of the course programme:\n\nUndertake a slow paced 2-mile nature walk where you will record your observations and gather inspiration for your nature journal. Please note that the walk will be across open countryside with undulating terrain.\nTake part in art and craft workshops to explore creative approaches to nature journalling. For example\, you will create journal pages using drawing\, collage and printmaking techniques.\nBy the end of the course\, you will have started your own personal and creative nature journal. It is hoped that\, by attending the course\, you will foster a love for nature journalling and continue to develop your nature journalling in future.\n\n \nExperience level:\nThis art course is suitable for beginners to improvers as there will be guided instruction throughout. Attendees will be limited to 8 to ensure that everyone will receive individual support. \nAbout the tutor:\nThe course will be led by Sharon Brookes who is the proprietor and lead tutor of Backbury House Retreats. She has a degree in Art\, is a practising artist as well as a fully qualified art teacher with 30 years’ experience of teaching in a range of educational settings. \n \nThe course timings:\nThe course runs from Saturday-Sunday\, 10:30am to 3:30pm on each day and offers a comprehensive programme. \nWhat’s included:\n\nExpert guidance by a fully qualified art teacher.\nPractical demonstrations and exercises on drawing and watercolour painting.\nA course booklet to take home.\nAll art materials to use on the day.\nA simple lunch plus tea and coffee throughout the day.\n\n \nWhat you will need to bring:\n\nClothing and footwear suitable for a nature walk across open countryside.\nA backpack to carry your equipment and packed lunch.\n\nAccess:\n\nWe offer free designated car parking for up to 8 vehicles found next to our private road. DESCRIPTION:Backbury Art Classes – Thursday Group – Winter Term – Details\nExplore the crisp beauty of winter in this term’s theme\, Textures and Colours of Ice\, Berries\, and Winter Birdlife. \nDesigned for beginners to intermediate students\, this 10-week mixed-media course explores the beauty of nature up close through drawing and painting tasks. \nFrom glossy winter berries and glistening dewdrops to delicate ice formations and soft bird plumage\, you’ll build the skills to capture rich tones and complex seasonal textures. \nIn this course\, you’ll learn to:\n\nUse resist techniques to create convincing dew and frost highlights\nRender soft feathers\, smooth berries\, and rough bark with texture and detail\nWork with a winter palette of deep blues and translucent crimsons\nImprove drawing accuracy and strengthen painting technique\n\nTerm details:\nThe art classes take place on Thursdays 2pm–4pm. \nThe 10-week Winter Term Backbury Art Classes will begin on Thursday 26 November until Thursday 11 February 2027 with a Christmas break for all classes between Monday 21 December 2026 and Sunday 03 January 2027. \nExperience level:\nThe art classes offer step-by-step tuition in tasks that have been carefully designed for improving knowledge and skill level. Due to the teacher-led activities\, the course is most suitable for beginners to improvers. However\, more experienced artists are welcome to attend and are encouraged to work as independently as desired. \nMost importantly\, attendees are limited to 8 to ensure that everyone can receive the help and support that they need. \nAbout the tutor:\nThe course will be led by Sharon Brookes who is the proprietor and lead tutor of Backbury House Retreats. She has a degree in Art\, is a practising artist as well as a fully qualified art teacher with 30 years’ experience of teaching in a range of educational settings. \nWhat’s included:\n\nExpert and tailored guidance by a fully qualified art teacher.\nAccess to visual exemplar\, worksheets and drawing aids for guidance during the course.\nAccess to art materials to use throughout the course.\nA light lunch plus teas and coffees.\n\nWhat you will need to bring:\n\nPlease bring an A4 folder to store and transport your artworks in.\nYou may also wish to bring an art apron.\nWe’ll provide all materials\, resources and refreshments during the course.\n\nDirections:\nOur full address and Google Map link are available at the bottom of this page. The studio is then a short two-minute walk away.\nWe also have two parking spaces closer to the studio\, with a shorter walk and no steps.\nPlease note that the studio bathroom is on the first floor and is accessed by stairs.
